12 Volt RV Refrigerators

What is a 12V DC compressor RV refrigerator, and how is it different from an absorption fridge?

A 12V DC compressor refrigerator runs directly from your RV's 12-volt battery bank and cools with a sealed compressor, the same method a household fridge uses. An absorption refrigerator uses heat from LP gas or a 120V heating element to move ammonia through a cooling unit. Compressor models cool down faster, hold temperature better in high outside heat, and tolerate an off-level campsite far better than absorption units. They do not run on propane, so your battery capacity and charging setup decide how long the fridge runs without hookups.

What size 12V RV refrigerator do I need for full-time RV living?

Size the refrigerator to your household and to your opening. Our 12V RV refrigerators come in 2.7, 8, 10.7, 15, and 19+ cubic foot options. A 2.7 cu ft unit fits a van build or works as a second fridge. For two full-time RVers who shop weekly, 10.7 cu ft is a common starting point. The 15 and 19+ cu ft residential-style units suit families or owners who stock up for longer stretches between stores. Larger units use more amp-hours per day, so confirm your battery bank can support the size you choose before ordering.

Are 12V RV refrigerators compatible with solar panels?

Yes. A 12V refrigerator draws power from your battery bank, and solar panels recharge that bank through a charge controller. The fridge never connects to the panels directly. To size your system, find the refrigerator's daily amp-hour rating on its spec sheet, add your other daily 12V loads, and make sure your usable battery capacity and solar output cover the total. Lithium batteries give you more usable capacity than lead-acid batteries with the same amp-hour rating, which matters when you are boondocking without a generator. Which brands make the best 12 volt refrigerator freezer for an RV?

This collection has 12V DC refrigerators from Norcold, GE Appliances, Dometic, and Furrion, including two-door refrigerator freezer models with a separate freezer compartment. The right unit for your RV comes down to three specs: cubic footage, the cutout dimensions of your opening, and the daily amp-hour draw your batteries can support. Compare those three numbers across brands before you compare price. If you are keeping an existing Dometic 8 cubic foot refrigerator in service, see our Dometic 8 cubic foot refrigerator parts and accessories.

Will a 12 volt refrigerator fit my existing RV refrigerator opening?

Measure the height, width, and depth of the opening itself, not the old refrigerator, and compare those numbers with the cutout dimensions listed on the product page. Check hinge direction (left-hand or right-hand), and confirm your 12V supply wiring is sized for the new unit's amp draw. If you are replacing an LP gas absorption refrigerator, have a qualified technician cap the gas line. Refrigerators ship by freight, so review the shipping details on the product page before checkout. Text or call 817-984-1852 with the make and model number of your current refrigerator and our team will help confirm fit before you order.
